Exploring Tribes & Oddities with Cody McKenna

The Circle of Wonders is an experimental rock solo project by indie musician Cody McKenna. The project’s debut was released back in 2017. Cody then began working on forming the second part of another intricate concept album series.
That work would culminate in the form of The Circle of Wonders’ sophomore LP, Volume II: Tribes & Oddities, which was released in January of 2019.
I spoke with Cody about the concept and story behind the record and this is what he had to say:

“Volume II: Tribes & Oddities”, takes place in 1960 and tells the story of an innocent little girl who comes from the mysterious town of Burdale. Her name is Alana Hale, and she has the extraordinary ability to see into the future, which she has no control over.
Time and time again the future she sees is an unfavorable one, often involving death and destruction. The album tells the story of her journey to find people who love and accept her the way she is – she just wants to find a home. She’s brought up in the forest of Burdale by a tribe of indigenous people who have, at this point, been uncontaced by modern society.
After she has a vision of the tribe being invaded and it’s people being slaughtered, the tribe elders fear the god of the flames (Droah), has been planting lies in her head, and they shun her from the village out of fear. Shortly after, she’s found alone, wandering the forest by a hiker/camper named Steven.
Feeling a strange connection to the innocent little girl, Steven decides to take her home to his wife and newborn son to be a part of their family. His wife, Amelia, doesn’t take too kindly to the newest addition to the family, and she decides to find a way to get rid of the girl after Alana draws a picture of Amelia and her son dead in a car crash, obviously another vision of the future (Amelia is very religious and fears Alana is some sort of devil child). In the middle of the night and behind her husband’s back, Amelia then dumps the girl off, coincidentally back in Burdale by giving her to the owner of an oddity shop called The Book of Oddities.
The owner, Nelson Myers, is a sadistic man who has a collection of “freaks” in a storage room located at the back of the shop. These poor people are trapped in cages and kept in the cold, dark closet at all times. Alana becomes the 23rd “freak” of his collection. During this same week, a traveling circus called The Circus Of Wonders just so happened to find it’s way into Burdale, and while going door to door handing out fliers for that night’s performance, Helen Santonelli (one of the owners) discovers these poor people are being held captive in this shop. She recruits a number of her circus performers, and that night they break into the shop to liberate the poor, innocent “freaks”.
During a struggle with Nelson, a candlestick is knocked to the floor causing the place to go up in flames. Although Nelson finds himself trapped inside, everyone else escapes, including a mysterious 3 year old boy named Michael (who Helen and Robert later adopt). The newly liberated people are offered jobs with the circus and they all accept. Alana finally finds her home with the circus and that’s our happy ending.”
