Teddy Grey is an artist from New York who has been consistently making unique and engaging content online for the last few years.
Some of his previous projects include the 2019 feature length YouTube cult classic, “Garfeld: A Garfield Parody”.
His newest release was a giant undertaking. A double album titled The Great Failed Romances of the Twentieth Century which was released on Mother West Records on October 22, 2021. Each song focuses on a famous couple from pop culture who split up.
The album is produced by Grey and his long-time collaborator, Michael Lepore. They joined forces with Charles Newman (The Magnetic Fields) and finished the album remotely with Newman in L.A and Grey and Lepore in NYC.
In my opinion, as a listener, this should almost be approached as the soundtrack to a live Broadway play. The songs sound and feel super theatrical as does the vocal delivery.
The sheer amount of pop culture references and the quality of the songs is truly impressive. Everything is so precise and each track just as different as the last.
These 30 songs really do have a little something for everyone. There’s a pop punk influence one moment and the next moment it’s a full on country song. Variety is definitely not something that Teddy Grey is lacking.
“Kiss Me on the Screen” was one of the many tracks that reminded me of Nate Ruess’ pre-fun. project, The Format.
Grey even conjures up some Bon Iver vibes on my personal favorite track, “Frog and Toad Are Friends (Frog and Toad)”.
Simply put, this album is a good time. It was created to sing along to and to brighten your day.
