Kate Boothman is Pioneering a New Sub-Genre on Her Album, My Next Mistake

Kate Boothman is a singer/songwriter from Ontario.
She just released her new album, My Next Mistake last week.

She described the new LP as a “massage rock” record.

The album opens strong with country crossover vibes complete with strings on the opening track “Please Don’t Be Late”.
Her vocal tone reminds me a little bit of Courtney Love, but way less grating.

“1000 Nights” is slightly creepy yet comforting. In a similar vein to Bright Eyes’ Casadaga album. There’s an amazing moment where chorus vocals emerge from under the track at about 2:53.

“Greatest Hit” is a brighter, jangly rock number. Similar to Rilo Kiley. There’s no doubt this one will have you clapping along.

“Black Tar” begins with some feedback and gave me Led Zeppelin vibes. Boothman even brings a pipe organ into the mix. During the chorus, I felt like I was getting inducted into a free love cult in the best way possible.

“17” is a beautiful ballad that should immediately get licensed into a series or film. It really captures the pain of looking back on decades past.

The title track opens with a heavy guitar riff, one of the heaviest we’ve encountered so far. This track has the most punk rock energy, both with lyrics and instrumental choices.

“Habits” is a ukelele driven song that has a specific fuzziness that reminds me of The Flaming Lips.

The closer “Take Me With a Grain of Salt” starts like the piano ballad I would expect to close this record. Very quickly the track opens up with strings and harmony vocals. This song screams live performance to me. You can tell that Boothman is closing her eyes and getting lost in the music here.

The album as a whole is relaxing while still remaining engaging. The country/blues influence is a consistent thread throughout each song.
While maintaining cohesiveness, the songs differ enough to each be interesting.
