Articles- “Indigo Child” EP Review

Articles are a five piece indie rock band from Northern California. They are influenced by Incubus, Deftones, and Envy on the Coast, to name a few. The band was formed in 2013 between guitarist Dylan Todt, bass player Daniel Kimoto, and drummer Roman Gonzalez. Adding Mariano Lopez on vocals and Travis Wade on guitar after an initial year of solid writing solidified their lineup and they began recording their EP, “Indigo Child” in February of 2014.

My first impression of this band is surprise that I’ve never heard of them. Their sound is right up my alley. There’s a particularly ambient sound like that of Receiving End of Sirens throughout most of the EP. Soaring guitar parts lead the listener into breakdowns where every member of the band flexes their respective musical chops.
There is a certain abrasiveness and at times perfectly placed pauses reminiscent of Glassjaw in the guitar riffs and the way they play off the rhythm section. During every track I found myself checking how long the song was and realizing it was almost over. Each time it was too soon.
At times the alternative rock sound mixed with pop sensibilities really remind me of The Used at their beginning.

This EP clocks in at less than a half hour from start to finish. By the end of “The Spell” you just want more. The songs are full of hooks and choruses that are sure to be stuck in your head for weeks to come. Part of that is thanks to the production from Josh Benton (ex Dance Gavin Dance).
Each track as a whole is well crafted on all ends. This is such a solid release I feel everyone should know about. I could go on and on about this band, but give Articles a listen for yourself below and buy their EP, “Indigo Child” HERE!
